Near full-length portrait of a gentleman in late middle age, with long natural brown hair, greying, and a white moustache. His dress is relatively plain, apparently in Commonwealth style. He wears a long brown coat, white gloves and white square collar. A sash is worn across the body from his right shoulder and a sword hilt is visible at the left hip, the hand resting lightly above this. His right hand holds a silver cane with a bone or ivory handle. He wears white stockings and gold garters on both legs. Behind, a woodland landscape and in the foreground an ivy-covered rock, bearing an inscription: 'I C – MIVT – SD'.
