The sitter of this portrait has not been strictly identified, but the Garter star and sash is possibly the badge of the Great Master of the Order of the Bath. This would imply that the subject may possibly be Augustus Frederick (1773–1843), Duke of Sussex. The only other possibilities would be William, Duke of Clarence and St Andrews (later William IV) who was Great Master from 1827 to 1830, and, just possibly, Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, who was Great Master from 1767 until 1827.
