Ribera was a Spanish painter, etcher and draughtsman, all of whose known career was spent in Italy. He worked in Parma and Rome before settling in Naples in 1616. His influence was wide, both in Naples and Spain, and he had many followers. Many of his paintings featured religious subjects with Latin inscriptions. The inscription here, 'Ex medita sapientia' can be translated 'From meditation comes wisdom'.
