This painting appears to be a copy, in part (with some compositional changes), of a portrait of Thomas Herbert (1656–1733), 8th Earl of Pembroke by the Dutch artist Willem Wissing, painted before 1687. Wissing was a pupil of Charles II's official painter, Peter Lely, and his portrait of Pembroke is at Wilton House, Wiltshire.
