In an ornate gilt frame this portrait was, until recently, thought to depict Mary, Queen of Scots (1542–1587) and her son, James (1566–1625, later King James VI of Scotland and King James I of England and Ireland). Wearing a high ruff, embroidered jacket and dark cloak, 'Mary' is portrayed being 'with child'. Mary had only one living child, James, from whom she was forcibly separated when he was less than a year old. However, following marriage to her third husband on 5 May 1567, Mary conceived twins, who died before birth.
