Originally from Yorkshire, Lancaster studied from 1961 to 1965 under Richard Hamilton at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, where he also taught from 1965 to 1966. He first visited New York in 1964, where he worked briefly as an assistant to Andy Warhol in his 'Factory'. Lancaster starred in a number of Warhol's films including 'Kiss' (1964) in which he appeared with the poet Gerald Malanga, 'Batman Drakula' (1964), and 'Couch' (1964). This trip was to provide him with information and ideas that influenced his artist friends such as Stephen Buckley and Keith Milow. He created this series as a homage to Warhol after his death.
