A contemporary version of the Prince Baltasar Carlos in the Riding School, painted by Velázquez c.1636 for the Count Duke Olivares (collection of the Duke of Westminster). Olivares (1587–1645) was First Minister to Philip IV (see After Velázquez P109). The Prince (1629–1646) was a keen horseman and in the pictures he is shown executing the levade, a difficult dressage manoeuvre. The image can also be read as a metaphor of ideal princely behaviour; for the prince who can master his horse will also master himself and his subjects.
