The portrait was commissioned by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) to mark the 50th anniversary of Prince Philip, HRH the Duke of Edinburgh’s presidency (1952–2011). He is the longest serving President of the RSA and the painter Stuart Pearson Wright was selected, following his success in the BP Portrait Awards in 2001.
