A version of the Kneller portrait in Buckingham Palace, this painting was acquired as a companion piece to a portrait of King George II (as Prince of Wales), also a version of a Kneller original. By basing this portrait on the earlier Kneller version (when Caroline was still Princess of Wales, rather than Queen Consort) Caroline is shown ten years younger than she really was at the time of becoming Queen, and with no trace of the smallpox she later suffered, which was definitely calculated to flatter. The portrait of George II is presently in long-term storage at The Herbert Museum and Art Gallery, owing to its condition.
