Born in Chicago, Alfred Cohen's work was firmly rooted within the European tradition of Post-Impressionist and Expressionist painting. During the 1950s he lived in Paris and moved to London in 1960. The view in this painting is of the cliffs and cove of Fairlight, which lies about three miles east of Hastings. It belongs to a series of Cohen’s works which depict the Channel coast.
