Born in St Helier, Ouless was one of Jersey's most celebrated marine artists, the son of a Jersey auctioneer. His parents emigrated from France to escape the French Revolution. Ouless studied painting in Paris before returning to Jersey. The nineteenth-century boom in shipbuilding within the Channel Islands resulted in many commissions from ship owners and masters. His son Walter Ouless became a portrait painter. Walter's daughter Catherine was also an accomplished artist.
