The Reverend George Hill, historian and poet, was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and at Queen’s College, Belfast. He was ordained to the remonstrant congregation of Ballymoney in September 1834. In 1837 he was called to Crumlin, where he remained until 1850, when he was appointed librarian of Queen's College. During his 30 years in the post he built up the nucleus of the present library. The portrait, three-quarter length, shows Hill in his late 50s, seated in the college library, leaning on copies of 'The Montgomery Manuscripts' and 'The Plantation in Ulster'. The idea for the painting came about when a meeting of Hill's friends and associates was held on 13th December, to discuss the best manner in which recognition could be paid to the services he had rendered to the study of Irish history.
