A full-length portrait of a young man seated at a table. He wears a brown coat with large buttoned cuffs and a full skirt. It is lined with silk of the same colour as the long waistcoat of blue silk trimmed with silver lace on the edges and pockets. Fine lawn sleeves show below the cuffs and at the velvet neckband. The breeches buttoned and tied at the knee are of the same material as the coat and, below them, he wears white silk stockings. His feet are hidden by a brown and white hound which looks up towards him. His left hand is tucked into his waistcoat and his right rests upon a book, one of several volumes on a table at which he sits. The chair is red leather edged with brass nails. The background shows on his right the bases of two pillars.
