This oil on canvas portrait of Richard Hughes, author of 'A High Wind in Jamaica', dates from 1937. Hughes and John were friends at Laugharne, where Hughes had settled at the Castle. Both were friends with Dylan Thomas who leased the boathouse at Laugharne from Hughes. Richard Hughes described John as 'A man in the 50 megaton range'. Hughes, born in Surrey of Welsh parentage, is credited with writing the world’s first radio play, 'Danger', broadcast on 15th January 1924. Although he only wrote four novels, Hughes was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1946. He died in 1976. Between the wars Augustus John became a society portraitist of renown. His subjects included W. B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and James Joyce.
