Scene at Sumburgh Airfield, c.1936. The painting was commissioned by Peter V. Clegg for Shetland Museum to provide a permanent record of the early years of the Shetland passenger and airmail service and to commemorate the start of the first scheduled air service to Shetland from Scotland in June 1936. The 'rivals' in the title refers to the competition between Ted Fresson and Eric Gander Dower as their airlines sought to serve the Orkney and Shetland Isles.
