Robert Eglesfield was born at Eglesfield, Cumberland and became chaplain to Queen Philippa. In 1340 he made his first purchase of land in Queen's Lane and the following year obtained a charter, sealed by the King, for the foundation of the College. The artist, Thomas Murray was a Scottish painter, active in London. He provided portraits for Oxford colleges but his increasing dependence on studio assistants led to a serious loss of individuality.
