This portrait is a replica of that in the Bodleian Library (Duke Humfrey's), perhaps painted in 1670 as one in a series of portraits of founders of colleges. Rachel Poole found evidence of payment by some colleges to John Taylor for portraits for the Schools Gallery. In the account books at Queen's for 1669, there is an entry for payment for two portraits of the Founder, and the artist might also be Taylor. The prototype for the founders' portraits was set by the Dutchman Sampson Strong, alias Starke or Starkey (d.1611).
