Robert Liston was a pioneering Scottish surgeon, noted for his skill in an era prior to anaesthetics. He was the first surgeon in Europe to perform an operation using ether as an anaesthetic. Thomas Campbell was a Scottish sculptor, famed for his marble portrait busts.
