Todhead Lighthouse is situated just south of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire and was operational between 1897 and 2007. It was designed by David Stephenson who designed over thirty lighthouses in and around Scotland.

Neilson was from Fife and trained at Dundee Art School. She became friends with and studied under Joan Eardley at what was to become known as the ‘Catterline School’ in Aberdeenshire. This piece is thought to be from her early work as she later developed a very strong use of colour as can be seen in her 1995 painting, ‘Animals Seeing Something We Can’t’.
