Arthur Burgess was born in Sydney, Australia, but settled in England in 1901. He specialised in maritime art and for many years produced paintings for Cammell Laird shipbuilders. This painting shows the 1917 visit of King George V and Queen Mary to the shipyard, and it includes many portraits of those present, added by Skinner.
