David Roberts was born in Edinburgh, and started work as a house-painter and decorator, studying art in the evening. In 1822 he moved to London to pursue a career in art, becoming president of the Society of British Artists in 1831. During the early 1830s he began to produce the sketches of foreign lands that were to make him famous.
