Peter Edwards has painted Ryan Giggs in his off duty clothes, with no clues to the sitter’s outstanding career at Manchester United. Giggs was born in Cardiff and moved to North Wales when young. Picked by Manchester United for their squad, he has played football there since 1990. He is considered to be one the great footballers of his generation, whose skill and style have been inspirational to United and to his home team of Wales. This portrait focuses on the gaze of the player. His penetrating eyes give a clear indication of his determination and drive. Edwards chose to focus on the qualities which make Giggs such a powerful sportsman: his ability to read situations on the pitch and act decisively. He is also shown as a person of considerable charm and poise.
