Alfred Wallis went to sea at the age of nine, later became a fisherman, and did not take up painting until his old age. His naïve paintings, frequently on pieces of cardboard, were not appreciated in his lifetime despite support from Christopher Wood and Ben Nicholson. Now, however, his paintings are much valued.
