This sketch illustrates the best known legend of Saint Dunstan; reading in his cell, the devil suddenly appeared to Dunstan and tried to tempt him. Dunstan put a pair of tongs in the fire, and then used them to hold the devil back.
Because of this legend, Dunstan is the patron saint of blacksmiths.
