A posthumous bust of Samuel Whitbread, founder and generous benefactor of Bedford Infirmary, who left £8,000 in a codicil in his will stipulating that half must be spent on the building and half on its services. The planning committee included the Duke of Bedford, Lord John Russell and Samuel Whitbread II, son of the sitter. The Infirmary, now Hospital, was officially opened on 13th August 1803.
