Looking up School Lane towards St Hilary’s church, prominent in this view is Salisbury’s Cottage, which was named after Sam Salisbury who lived there for many years. The cottage was end-on to the lane and was built on the cruck principle, two large baulks of timber leaning against each other in an ‘A’-shape to form the gable. These long low cottages usually had a thatched roof with a narrow low room in the roof space. Salisbury’s Cottage received a direct hit from a bomb in March 1941 and was completely destroyed.
