A Zulu is a type of Scottish fishing boat with a steeply raked stern, which got its name from the time when it was developed, during the Zulu Wars. Zulu vessels dominated Scotland’s east-coast fishing fleet, bringing in large quantities of fish from the North Sea.

Finlay was one of the first artists in Britain to give form to his ideas through collaboration with craft makers to construct his works. When works are exhibited, the collaborator’s name is included alongside to show Finlay’s process.
