A sketch of a calm sea from the 'Castilian', showing the effects of sunlight on the sea and sky. The artist indicates the representation of the sea and sky through a series of coloured horizontal lines. The sea is shown as a purple wash in the foreground and then a broken blue-line wash, interspersed with a white one. This is repeated by increasingly broken lines until close to the horizon it is almost totally white. The point on the horizon where the sea meets the sky is shown by a deep pink line with a pale yellow one immediately above. The sky is indicated by layers of pale paint to indicate light, which is reflected on the surface of the water close to the horizon. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Castilian', from London to the Mediterranean, between October 1937 and February 1938.
