The artist was 22 when he produced this self portrait. Frith was born in London. He studied and taught at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and at St Martins School of Art. Frith's paintings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy and his work has included lithography.

The painting was given to the Gallery via the Contemporary Art Society in 1954. The Society has given 20 works of art to the Collection since the Second World War. These have helped to bring the Collection up to date, besides providing support for emergent and leading contemporary British artists.
