Two vessels, one flying British flags, bombarding each other with cannon fire. Flamborough Head is in the distance and there is fire on Beacon Hill. An attractive, but rather imaginative view of the naval battle of Flamborough Head near Bridlington in 1779. An American squadron under John Paul Jones defeated a British force under Captain Richard Pearson, althought the merchant ships that the latter was escorting reached Scarborough safely. In reality, the vessels depicted here bear little resemblance to those really involved in this famous battle.
