Three-quarter-length seated portrait, the sitter turning to his left to face the spectator. He is wearing the Chancellor's robes, with his hands crossed over his lap. Sir Alex Jarrett was Chancellor of the University of Birmingham from 1983 until 2002, succeeding Sir Peter Scott. He was a prominent industrialist and businessman, and after beginning his career in the civil service in 1949 he went on to become Chairman of the publishing company Reed International.

Norman Hepple was a London born artist and the son of painter Robert Hepple.
