During his career, Sir Andrew Clark (1826–1893) was one of the leading physicians in London, due to his remarkable powers of observations, his thoroughness and his scientific approach. He started his career as assistant surgeon at Haslar Royal Naval Hospital. He later went on to become the first curator of the museum at the London Hospital. There he was elected assistant physician before developing the largest London consulting practice of his day. Clark was also elected fellow to the Royal College of Physicians in 1858 and served as president between 1888 and 1893. From 1868 Clark was the personal physician to Prime Minister William Gladstone. Clark’s death in 1893 is often taken as a contributory factor to Gladstone’s decision to retire the next year at the age of 83.
