Barker, originally from Bath, worked in Paris and London. It is highly unlikely that he travelled to the Crimea. This portrait was almost certainly painted entirely in his studio, with the two sitters posing there. The background was probably copied from photographs. The Crimean War was one of the first to be documented by war photographers.
