Arthur Ralph Middleton Todd was born in Cornwall, the son of the artist Ralph Todd. After army service in the 1914–1918 War, he entered the Slade School studying under Professor Tonks. On leaving the Slade, he practised watercolour painting and engraving and became known in this country and America. He went on to teach engraving at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in the 1930s and then painting at the Royal Academy Schools from 1945–1949 and the City of London School from 1950–1956. During this later period he painted many fine portraits of famous people. He was very critical of his own work and turned down many commissions.
