Sir Stamford Raffles was the founder of Zoological Society of London (ZSL) in 1826 and was the first President. The portrait is reproduced in Fish & Montagu (1976:24) who include an analysis of all that is known about the portrait. The words on the label are: 'Sir T. Stamford Raffles FRS 1781–1828. Founder and First President. Painted by James Lonsdale 1777–1839. Exhibited in the Royal; Academy – 1818. Presented by A. Spencer Moore, Esq'. Lonsdale's signature is not visible on the canvas. The portrait shows a young man of byronic beauty.
