The original artist's maquette for the South African War Memorial in Ward Jackson Park. The subject is reputedly Joseph Andrew Bright McClure, who fought in the South African and First World Wars and was killed in France in August 1917 after being promoted to Major. After returning from the South African War he sat for Jones who used him as his model.
