St Mary-le-Strand was designed by James Gibbs (1682-1754) and erected between 1714 and 1717. During Garstin's lifetime, it was threatened with demolition because it obstructed the traffic in the Strand. This painting, 'Across the River, St Paul's' and 'Ludgate Hill' may date from 1919. Garstin spent most of his working life as the father of the Newlyn School. He settled in Newlyn in 1886 but made frequent visits to London.
