The painting depicts a richly-coloured coastal sunset with tiny, shadowy figures walking along the beach, silhouetted against the deep space of sea and sky. Layers of translucent colour build the subtle transformation of night sky into sun reflected on water. This painting is one of a series painted while in Lyme Regis in which the artist traces the sun's path through rising to setting and the infinite nuances of colour and light produced by its presence above the sea.
