After the First World War, Bomberg became disillusioned by the destructive power of man and machine and changed his hard-edged pre-war abstract style. This painting is probably one of approximately fifty ‘imaginative compositions’ Bomberg completed c.1921–1922. Although still an abstract work, figurative elements seem to emerge within the loose, organic composition. While travelling in Palestine and Spain between 1923 and 1927, Bomberg abandoned abstraction altogether and developed a distinctive, but quite realistic approach to landscape painting.
