Baynton was influenced by painters such as Edward Poynter, Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Lord Leighton who specialised in classical and historical scenes. This work is said to have been painted in his home in Queen Street in Coventry around 1880. His sisters posed for the figures and the roses were obtained from Coventry market.
