A letter to Margaret Morris from Fergusson explains the inspiration for this carved portrait made in the garden of his mother's Edinburgh home: 'The sculpture on the whole is going very well... The new stand I made is quite a success... Tell K. I'm putting the feeling of the last time I saw her, into my sculpture – full and round'.

The 'K.' that Fergusson refers to was Kathleen Dillon, one of Morris's dance students that he had met in London. He had painted a portrait of her called 'Rose Rhythm' (held in a private collection) the previous month. The links between portrait and sculpture are enhanced by the rose-coloured stone chosen.
