The painting probably depicts a scene on the banks of the River Tyne that flows through the town of East Linton in the parish of Prestonkirk in East Lothian, formerly Haddingtonshire. Robert Noble resided here from c.1890 and concentrated almost exclusively on depicting East Linton scenes.
