This is a copy in reverse of the picture attributed to Coypel in the Prado. Whilst bathing naked, the young Susannah was spied upon by two elders of her tribe. They threatened to accuse her of adultery if she did not give herself to them. She refused, and they did accuse her publicly; this is the episode shown in the painting. She was condemned to death, but the prophet Daniel, unconvinced by her guilt, succeeded in finding out the truth when he questioned the two elders separately. Susannah and the elders is a much-loved subject in art, and many paintings represent her bathing.
