Cecil Collins was born in Plymouth and as a young man worked as a mechanic in Plymouth Docks, before attending Plymouth Art School.

One of the high points of Collins’ career was his inclusion in the International Surrealist Exhibition in London in 1936. As well as containing some of the great masterpieces of 20th-Century art, this exhibition has gone down in history because Salvador Dali delivered a lecture for it whilst wearing a diving suit!

Collins was married to his wife Elisabeth for 58 years. She was his favourite model and appears in many works by him.
