first plaque inscription: BEYOND THE BRIDGE ON THE OPPOSITE BANK OF THE CANAL WAS J J HAYES BOATBUILDING YARD, WHERE MANY VESSELS OF THE CLYDE WERE LAUNCHED BROADSIDE INTO THE CANAL. GENERATING A HUGE WAVE OF WATER, THE LAST LAUNCH TOOK PLACE IN 1945. ONE OF THE VESSELS BUILT HERE WAS TEMPORARILY RENAMED VITAL SPARK FOR THE FIRST PARA HANDY TELEVISION SERIES,BACK IN THE 1960'S; second plaque inscription: I LIVED IN TOWNHEAD FROM 1918 AND USED TO RUN WITH MY BROTHER TO STAND BAREFOOT ON THE BANK OF THE CANAL. WHEN A BOAT WAS LAUNCHED FROM HAYS BOATYARD WE WOULD RUN INTO THE SPRAY WHENEVER WE COULD BUT WERE CHASED BACK OUT OF THE WAY, I REMEMBER THE MEN WINDING THE WHEEL TO LIFT OPEN THE WOODEN BRIDGE AND ALLOW COAL BOATS OR THE GYPSY QUEEN TO PASS THROUGH. IT WAS A GREAT TREAT TO GET A SAIL ON THE GYPSY QUEEN - MARTHA FRAZER BORN 1916
