At the beginning of the Victorian period mail coaches were the best means of transport. The coach to London set off at 11pm from the White Hart on Stall Street in Bath, arriving in London the following evening. The fare was one pound and eight shillings, equivalent to around £70 today. Coach travel was soon replaced by the railways, which offered cheaper, quicker more reliable transport.
