The French artist Georges De La Tour is considered to be one of the most original painters of 17th century France. He lived and worked at Luneville in Lorraine. His paintings, often of candlelit scenes, are famous for their sense of stillness, calm and mystery. The Choirboy, with its dramatic use of light and shade, is typical of La Tour's style. The figure, probably a young Franciscan choirboy, sings from a book, his face lit by the glow from the candle flame.
