It is not known whether 'The Executioner' was the original title of this painting or whether it was inspired by a specific work of literature, but it seems that the figure to the right is about to be executed by the man with the long, curved sword. Influenced by Eugène Delacroix, later in his career Adolphe Monticelli painted a number of fantasy pictures, some of which had orientalist and North African themes. The artist's use of blocks of intense, vibrant colour help evoke the exotic setting. The heavy impasto and impressionistic description of figures are typical features of the artist's later style.
