Brangwyn was a painter in oils, watercolourist, etcher and lithographer, at first self-taught then under William Morris. After going to sea he produced many works depicting scenes on board ship and subjects inspired by his travels. His early works such as the Beecroft picture tended to be more grey and morose in colour whereas his later works, particularly murals, were much richer and more colourful.
