A scene from the House of Commons in 1987, as stated in the wording painted along the centre line of the canvas: 'The other picture: A view of the Smoking Room and Library of the House of Commons in March 1987, commissioned for the House by 156 of the Members of Parliament who were not included in the official painting' (see WOA 3232 for the official painting). Each of the 156 Members paid £100 each to be included in this pictorial history of which they would each receive a signed print when it was finished. The radical and informal approach agreed for the composition divided the canvas up into seven separate vignettes of the fine Victorian interiors of the Smoking Room and Library rooms. It was unveiled in June 1988 in Upper Waiting Hall.
